Just read the article, and then an update...Some seriously old news --
from around the time I returned to usenet in 2006, in fact. But anyway.
SETI has denied the story's truth, but they could be lying, or not. No
way to tell. Hard to imagine them lying, and doubly hard to imagine a guy
like Frank Drake going along with it. However, failure of imagination is
not an argument. Maybe he was convinced to go along. Doubt he'd sell out,
at his age, but a threat to interfere with his personal finances sounds
like something the sort of people who'd want it covered up would use as
an inducement, and an effective method, too. Or maybe they used other
scare tactics. He's 78, after all. I'm sure he has a young relative or
family member somewhere, and a threat to that person would likely be
immensely productive for those doing a cover-up. Lots of possibilities...
If SETI are being honest, they're being honest, and there's no story.

Just read the article, and then an update...Some seriously old news --
from around the time I returned to usenet in 2006, in fact. But anyway.
SETI has denied the story's truth, but they could be lying, or not. No
way to tell. Hard to imagine them lying, and doubly hard to imagine a guy
like Frank Drake going along with it. However, failure of imagination is
not an argument. Maybe he was convinced to go along. Doubt he'd sell out,
at his age, but a threat to interfere with his personal finances sounds
like something the sort of people who'd want it covered up would use as
an inducement, and an effective method, too. Or maybe they used other
scare tactics. He's 78, after all. I'm sure he has a young relative or
family member somewhere, and a threat to that person would likely be
immensely productive for those doing a cover-up. Lots of possibilities...
If SETI are being honest, they're being honest, and there's no story.
